The earthquake was centered in Calama at a depth of 99 kilometers (about 61.5 miles). The USGS said it received 25 reports of people having felt the earthquake at the time of publication.

The Chile earthquake struck hours after a 4.7-magnitude earthquake was reported in California on Wednesday (January 1), according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered in Cobb at a depth of 1.1 kilometers (about 0.7 miles).
