Fifth Barnstable District Representative Steve Xiarhos says Dakota's Law to create a fund to care for retired police and military dogs has passed the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.
Xiarhos says the bill has strong bipartisan support and it now moves to the Ways and Means Committee.
The measure is named after K9 Dakota, who participated in the Boston Marathon bombing arrests before developing K9 PTSD.
Xiarhos says while the bill still has a long road ahead, it builds on Nero's Law, which ensures that K9s injured in the line of duty get emergency care.
