A 22-year-old man has died after his kayak capsized over the weekend.
Wellfleet emergency personnel responded to the waters off of Great Island shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday for a report of a kayaker in distress and search efforts began in the water and on the shoreline.
The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a helicopter to search from the air. The kayaker was found shortly after 8 p.m. and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in critical condition.
He died a short time later and his name is being held pending family notification.
The Wellfleet Fire Department is thanking the agencies that assisted in the search and rescue operation.
