Barnstable County Dredge Director Ken Cirillo says there is an urgent need for icebreaking in Cape Cod harbors because thick ice has restricted commercial fishing, impeded emergency access and damaged docks.
The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners has been briefed on the situation, leading to a proposed emergency ordinance to appropriate funds for icebreaking.
If the Assembly of Delegates votes to ratify the ordinance today, 50-thousand-dollars will be used for icebreaking operations.
If approved, the county will contract with a private tug company to break ice in priority harbors.
