Mass Audubon says as water temperatures drop, endangered turtles can become cold-stunned and wash up on Cape Cod beaches.
Officials say the turtles are not dead - they are in distress and need immediate help.
If a turtle is found on a beach, it should not be returned to the water.
The turtle should be moved to an area above the high tide line and covered lightly with dry seaweed.
The exact sport should be marked with beach debris or an arrow in the sand, and it should be immediately reported to the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Trained rescuers will respond to the scene and transport the turtle for care and rehabilitation.
