Barnstable Police No Longer Part Of Massachusetts Civil Service System

The Barnstable Police Department is no longer part of the Massachusetts Civil Service System.

Last month, the Town Council voted unanimously to remove the department from the system and a 30-day waiting period was put in place before it could be announced.

The Civil Service System hosts exams and ranks candidates, but the town says that slows its ability to hire effectively.

Next week, the town will notify the Human Resource Division of Civil Service about the removal.

The search for non-civil service hires will begin after that.
