Barnstable County Commissioners have submitted an amicus brief regarding a Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court case on land rights.
The case centers on whether the public retains access rights to roads that were discontinued by county governments.
The outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications especially for municipalities and property owners who believed the roads were no longer public and preserved, developed, or relied on the land as private.
Commissioner Mark Forest supports the county's involvement, saying if the wrong side prevails, it opens the door to complications in the management of conservation and public lands.
