The owners of an upstate New York property have been charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with a fire that killed a Cape Cod mother and daughter.
Thirty-five-year-old Shannon and one-year-old Margaret Hubbard died when the vacation rental caught fire last October. Dennis Police Officer John Hubbard and the couple's three-year-old son survived the blaze.
On Wednesday a grand jury in Dutchess County, New York handed up indictments against Dennis Darcy and his wife Meredith and they pleaded not guilty during arraignment.
Prosecutors allege that the vacation rental was not in compliance with state fire, building and residential codes requiring smoke detectors.
They also claim the owner did not have a short-term special use permit to rent the home.
The defendants are due back in court on April 7th.
