Governor Halts Closing Of Busy Cape Mental Health Center

A big win for The Cape.

Governor Healey has halted a move to close The Cape and Islands Community Mental Health Center in Pocasset.

The Governor had planned to close state run centers in both Canton and The Cape. Now she says she wants the communities to work together in order to try to set the proper path forward.

The area had been pressuring the legislative delegation and The Governor for a reprieve.

State Rep Steve Xiarhos in a statement said:

"This victory belongs to all of us—the community members, advocates, elected officials, and front line workers who fought to protect mental health care in our region.

Our voices made the difference. Keep fighting for compassionate and professional mental health care in Massachusetts. "

The Governor had said that the state could have saved 31 million dollars by shifting programs to other state facilities.
