A passenger aboard a Volaris flight in Mexico attempted to hijack the plane on Sunday (December 8), aiming to divert it to the United States. The flight, originally traveling from León to Tijuana, was forced to land in Guadalajara after the incident. The suspect, identified only as Mario, was detained by the crew after he attacked a flight attendant and tried to enter the cockpit, according to a statement from Volaris Airlines.
The Mexican National Guard arrested Mario upon landing in Guadalajara. Authorities reported that Mario, who was traveling with his wife and two children, claimed that a close relative had been kidnapped. He allegedly received threats that the relative would be harmed if he continued to Tijuana.
Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena praised the crew's quick response, stating that their actions ensured the safety of all passengers and crew members. The airline has vowed to pursue legal action against Mario to ensure he faces the full weight of the law.
After the suspect was removed, the flight continued to Tijuana without further incident. Volaris emphasized that passenger safety remains their top priority. The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in regions affected by cartel violence, such as Guanajuato, where extortion and kidnapping are prevalent.
