Half Money In Place For Cape Bridges Project

The U.S. Department of Transportation is providing nearly $1 billion to replace the Sagamore Bridge, marking a significant step in funding for the Cape bridges.

The $933 million grant represents almost half of the $2.1 billion needed for the project.

Massachusetts has already secured $1.7 billion in federal funds for the Cape Cod Canal Bridges Replacement Program.

This funding will initiate Phase One, focused on replacing both aging Sagamore and Bourne bridges, which are crucial gateways to Cape Cod and considered functionally obsolete.

The project aims to ensure economic, environmental, and social benefits by improving transportation infrastructure in the region while addressing long-term structural deficits with a total estimated cost of $4.5 billion.
