Western Mass Woman Saluted For Heroic Cape Act

A couple of bystanders saved a swimmer who nearly drowned at Dowses Beach in Osterville.

Barnstable Police received a 911 call on Friday about a swimmer in distress and when officers arrived, they found the 46-year-old had been rescued by two good Samaritans.

Thirty-three-year-old Frances Lonergan of Longmeadow heard the victim yelling, jumped into the channel and began pulling the victim to safety with the help of a vacationer from New York.

The rescued swimmer was conscious and alert when taken to Cape Cod Hospital. Police say the good Samaritans' actions exemplified true bravery and compassion.
