Excavation work has begun at the site of a former Nantucket cranberry bog.
The 40-acre Windswept Bog project is the largest of its kind on the island and will work to restore the site to natural wetlands.
The project received a million-dollar grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, toward the estimated 3-point-4 million dollars it will take for full restoration.
The excavation will remove sand from the bog and fill drainage ditches.
The project is expected to be completed next winter, with a stop in the warmer months to protect wildlife.
