Appeal Rejected In Aquinnah Conflict Of Interest Case

A judge in Suffolk County has rejected an appeal by an Aquinnah Select Board member in a conflict-of-interest case.

The Massachusetts Ethics Commission found Gary Haley committed two violations of the law in 2018. A master electrician,

Haley chose himself to do conduit work for the Aquinnah Circle cultural district and was paid more than 17-thousand dollars.

In October 2022, the commission ordered Haley to pay a 10-thousand dollar fine. Haley appealed on the grounds of offering his services in an emergency, but Superior Court Judge Mark Hallal upheld the original ruling and noted that Haley willfully participated and voted as a board member on a matter in which he had a financial interest.
