Task Force Goal Is To Tamp Down Rabies In Region

The Massachusetts Rabies Task Force is handing out some 80 thousand oral rabies vaccine baits throughout Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth, Barnstable, Wareham, Carver, Kingston, Middleboro, Rochester, Marion, and Lakeville.

The goal is to eradicate rabies in the area while also having wildlife find and eat the vaccines as well.

So far The Cape has been rabies free for about eight years.

That ended in 2021 when a case was detected in the mid-Cape area.

Now officials are asking that if homeowners find any of the baits on their property to put on gloves and to remove them.

They could cause an upset stomach to family pets if they are consumed.

The vaccine drop begins today through the rest of the week.
