New Study: The Steamship Authority Isn't Going Electric Anytime Soon

A new feasibility study by a New York based consulting firm says the electrification of the Steamship Authority's fleet is a long and costly way off. According to the Vineyard Gazette the consultants presented three options for hybrid systems combining electric/diesel systems but say that a solution would not result in significant energy cost reductions. Electrification would also require significant infrastructure dockside with what is described as electrical substations about the size of two large shipping containers in destinations serviced by the SSA.
