The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries says shell fishing is banned for portions of the Mashpee River and Shoestring Bay in the towns of Barnstable and Mashpee.
The state says seasonal water quality changes have caused the affected areas to no-longer meet the established criteria for harvesting.
The closure will last indefinitely.
