Chatham Concerned With Coast Guard Vessel Changes

Chatham officials are once-again expressing concern about changes being made by the United States Coast Guard.

The USCG plans to replace a trio of 42-foot rescue vessels with a couple of newer, 45-foot utility boats.

The town says the old boats were designed to handle Chatham's constantly-changing shoals which make fisherman access from the harbor to the ocean a dangerous journey.

The Coast Guard downgraded the rescue status of the Chatham station in 2019 because it said surf conditions did not occur frequently enough.
