State Says Wellfleet Must Reveal Anonymous Donor

The state is stepping in over a public records request on the Outer Cape involving an anonymous donor helping out a major municipal purchase. Earlier this year, Wellfleet Town Administrator Dan Hoort announced someone had offered one-million dollars towards the purchase of 250 acres of shellfish flats before town meeting voted to buy the flats for two-million dollars. The Provincetown Banner requested the donor's identity, and when Hoort denied it, the town appealed to the state, arguing such a financial involvement should be a matter of public record. The state supervisor of records ordered the information be made available with ten business days on June 11th, according to a report from the Banner.
