Coast Guard Station Chatham Gets New Designation

Coast Guard Station Chatham has had a designation change.

Since its establishment in 1872, the station has been designated a surf station. However, it has now been changed to a heavy weather station which means crews can only respond if surf on the Chatham bar is under eight feet.

The designation is the only change for Coast Guard Station Chatham which will maintain its current staffing and resources.

Coast Guard Station Chatham is home to the 36-foot CG36500, which was the boat used to rescue 32 men from the wreck of the Pendleton in 1952. The historic rescue captured in the movie, “The Finest Hours.”
