A portion of East Beach on Chappaquiddick has been closed to ORV traffic after several oystercatcher chicks were run over and crushed by the vehicles.
The Trustees of Reservations posted the information on its Facebook page. The non-profit group says about two miles of the outer beach has been closed because drivers ignored warnings to slow down because of the hatchlings.
The group says the beach won’t re-open until the chicks are capable of avoiding vehicular traffic.
The Trustees of Reservations preserves natural and historic places in Massachusetts. The group often purchases the properties it is trying to protect.
