SSA Ferry Runs Aground With 146 Passengers Aboard

The Steamship Authority ferry “Woods Hole” is out of service for the time being after it ran aground Thursday morning on its approach to a slip in Vineyard Haven.

In a news release, the SSA said the ferry was able to back off the soft bottom and berth safely after the incident. There were 146 passengers aboard but no reported injuries.

The Steamship Authority says while the cause of the momentary grounding has yet to be determined, both the Captain and Pilot have decades of experience.

The ferry was cleared by the Coast Guard to return to Woods Hole without passengers and will remain out of service until it is cleared to return by the Coast Guard.
