First Right Whale Death of 2018 Off Virginia Coast

Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the death of an endangered North Atlantic right whale off the coast of Virginia.

Officials say the whale was discovered off  the coast near the North Carolina border on Monday.

Early indications are the whale was entangled in line. NOAA says it is the first reported right whale death of 2018. At least 17 died in U.S. and Canadian waters in 2017.

There are fewer than 475 North Atlantic right whales left in our oceans.
