Groundbreaking got underway Monday for the Coonamessett River Restoration. That $3.5 million project has been discussed and planned for more than a dozen years.
The first phase of the project is the removal of the Lower Dam and restoring the Lower Bog which will involve dredging out several feet of sand that had accumulated over the years due to cranberry farming. A foot bridge is also part of the work.
The goal of the project is to restore the Coonamessett River’s natural course and habitat for species that once thrived in the waterway.
