WXTK Better Health Report: New Blood Sugar Monitor

This is a great week for people with diabetes.

Last time I told you about the benefits of eating your carbs at the end of a meal.

And now, in case you haven’t heard, the FDA just announced that they have approved the first device that can monitor blood sugar in adults with diabetes without the need for a finger prick.

The system is called the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System and it works by implanting a small sensor just below the skin. The sensor continually monitors blood sugar and sends the results to a mobile reader.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have any kind of alarm to alert the user to an abnormally high or low blood sugar.

But just the ability to keep track of blood sugar without having to do a finger prick is a big deal.

It will help people keep much better track of their blood sugar throughout the day and not just once in the morning as many people do now.

The problem with checking once a day is that your blood sugar may be fine then, but not OK at other times.

Using this device will really help people notice the effect specific foods and meals have on their blood sugar.

This is Joan Trimble wishing you wellness.
