The Wellfleet Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a vehicle going over a beach dune early Friday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. at the Beachcomber located at 1120 Cahoon Hollow Road.
Upon arrival, fire and rescue observed a large portion of the Cahoon Hollow beach parking lot being eroded and washing away by the torrential rain; a sedan was parked at the edge of the lot.
Crews attached a cable and winch in an attempt to secure the unoccupied vehicle from washing down the dune to the beach approximately 50 feet below.
However, an area of the lot collapsed during the effort to save the vehicle, washing away the sedan toward the ocean.
Personnel closed down the area and resumed efforts the next morning to recover the vehicle, which was done successfully.
A significant portion of the public parking area needs to be rebuilt and remains closed, however the Beachcomber parking lot remains open.
