WXTK Better Health Report

According to Harvard, more than 50 percent of American adults suffer from high-frequency hearing loss by the time they reach 60 years old. One-third of women in their 50s and nearly two-thirds in their 60s have experienced hearing loss.

They quote a study done by Brigham and Women’s in Boston that found women who frequently use pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen increase their risk of hearing loss. The more frequently they took these medications, the higher their risk.

Ibuprofen is an NSAID and goes by names like Advil or Aleve. Acetaminophen is also known as Tylenol.

They didn’t find the same results with aspirin, but an earlier study by Brigham and Women’s on men did show aspirin also caused hearing loss along with ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

Both studies followed large numbers of people, over 26,000 men and over 62,000 women.

Bottom line is try to use pain killers sparingly if you can.

This is Joan Trimble wishing you wellness.
