Several Wareham Public Schools were placed on lockdown Monday following a threatening email sent to a school administrator.
Wareham Police Chief Kevin D. Walsh said in an afternoon news conference the sender of the email claimed to be inside one of Wareham’s schools and was going to shoot people.
Walsh says all of the Wareham public schools that were open and contained students and staff were evacuated, with Wareham Police escorting students and staff on to school buses and taken to the Wareham YMCA. The schools included Wareham High School, Wareham Middle School, and the Minot Forest Elementary School.
As of early this afternoon, Chief Walsh said the sweep of the schools was in the final stages and that he was 99.99% sure at that point all buildings were secure.
“There was nobody hurt in this incident, at all,” said Walsh, “and we kept people being upset to a minimum, I believe. It was a disruption to their school day but I believe that school life will carry on tomorrow. It shouldn’t be an issue.”
Walsh added that it took State Police, Wareham Police, and Wareham Fire to work in unison to get the operation done.
“I thought it went very smooth and I thought it was actually a model for safety.”
The investigation into the sender of the email is being conducted by State Police and Wareham Police.
