WXTK Better Health Report: New guidelines on juice consumption for toddlers.
In case you didn’t hear about it, for the first time in 16 years, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines regarding juice.
Specifically they recommended not giving juice to infants until after they are a year old. The reason is they feel there is no reason to give a child that young any juice.
The juice just tends to take away from other liquids like breast milk or formula, which provide important protein and other nutrients. When babies start eating solids, they recommend providing pureed or mashed fruit instead of juice.
For toddlers from age 1-3 they recommend limiting juice to 4oz per day. From age 4-6 no more than 6 oz and no more than 8 oz per day for older kids and teens. The reason is again, drinking too much juice just takes away from eating or drinking other foods such as whole fruits, vegetables and milk.
And speaking of milk, you know the consumption of milk over the years has dropped about 43% among kids and this is a real concern. Milk is a low sugar source of protein and B vitamins, and it’s interesting that as milk consumption has dropped, obesity has risen.
