The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, on Wednesday, issued a Supplemental Inspection Report on the Pilgrim Nuclear plant in Plymouth based on inspections that were carried out in December of 2016 and January of this year.
The report mirrors what the NRC said at a March public hearing attended by officials from Entergy, the plant’s owner and operator, elected officials, and residents.
The NRC says while Entergy and Pilgrim showed some improvements in 2016, the improvements were not significant enough to move the nuclear plant out of Column 4, which is one step away from a mandatory shutdown. However, the NRC says issues persist with the plant’s safety culture that allows for persistent problems.
The NRC will continue with enhanced oversight of the plant which includes an additional resident inspector at the plant.
