Hyannis has changed quite a bit over the past 52 years but one thing that hasn’t changed all that much is the Hyannis Fire District’s headquarters. The outdated, undersized station will soon be a thing of the past as a groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday morning for a new $18.5 million structure.
Acting Fire Chief Dean Melanson says when the current building was constructed in 1964, there was one full-time, daytime firefighter and the department responded to 400-to-500 runs per year. There are currently twelve firefighters per shift, responding to about 7,000 runs per year:
District voters approved the new fire station last April, the fourth attempt at getting it approved. Construction is expected to take at least 18 months.
