You may know that obesity is associated with heart disease but did you know that it’s also associated with an increased risk for cancer?
Until recently, the kind of cancers associated with obesity was debated. But then the British Medical Journal published a meta-analysis in February of about 100 large observational studies to try to pinpoint which cancers.
And they found that out of 36 kinds of cancer, there was strong evidence of a link to obesity for cancers of the colon, rectum, liver and gallbladder, pancreas, breast, uterine lining, ovary, kidney, and the gastric cardia (which is the junction of the esophagus and stomach); also a certain type of esophageal cancer; and a type of bone marrow cancer called multiple myeloma.
Why does excess body fat cause cancer? One theory is that inflammatory fatty acids can cause cellular damage, and the more fat you have, the more fatty acids you are exposed to.
Just another reason to watch your weight.
