An unmarked, abandoned cesspool appears to have led to Thursday morning's crane collapse in Cotuit.
Fire Chief Sean Brown says the crane fell between two homes at around 8:30 a.m. as crews were removing trees and the ground covering the old cesspool gave way.
Chief Brown says no one was aware of the old cesspool.
There were no injuries, but the deck of a home was destroyed before the crane landed on the roadway near 801 Main Street.
Firefighters and utility crews secured the area while the crane was removed.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
