Buffer Zone Proposed For First Responders Working Scene

Cape Cod State rep Steven Xiarhos is introducing legislation that would create a 25 foot buffer zone around First Responders at a call.

Xiarhos is joined by State Rep Richard Wells .

Both are retired law enforcement officials.

The bill would allow for first responders to set up that buffer zone, then warn people they are violating the zone.

Fines range from one to five thousand dollars.

Officials say it would protect first responders during a call without infringing on the public's right to know.

However, the Massachusetts ACLU is not on board.

The contend that the law would infringe on the First Amendment rights of the media.

It is unclear when the measure will come up for a vote in the legislature.
