Tisbury Select Board Agrees To Remove Benches From Two Bus Stop Shelters

The Tisbury Select Board has agreed to remove the benches from two area bus stop shelters.

The move comes after the Vineyard Transit Authority expressed concerns about the bus stops across from the Steamship Authority terminal, saying they have become a place for loitering, drug use, urination, fights and people sleeping.

Tisbury Police Chief Chris Habekost believes removing the benches is the best way to address the situation, saying it's not meant to be a punishment.

Chief Habekost says it's an effort to discourage people from camping out in the enclosures.

When the benches are removed, the bus shelters will be standing-room-only.
