Water Main Break Creates Sinkhole in Hyannis

A water main break in Hyannis resulted in a five foot deep sinkhole opening up on Dumont Drive just east of the West End Rotary. A Cape Cod Times delivery van found the sinkhole the hard way. Nose first.

The driver was able to get out of the van on her own. She was not injured in the incident.

The Hyannis Fire Department was first alerted to a problem around 2 a.m. when it started receiving calls from people who said they had lost their water.

Crews are currently on the scene making repairs to both the water main and the sinkhole.  Dumont Drive and the eastbound lane of Main Street from the West End Rotary to the split at South Street are currently closed to traffic.
