Mashpee Wampanoag's Fight for a Reservation

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council Chairman, Cedric Cromwell will be in Washington D.C. tomorrow, appearing before the House Committee on Natural Resources.

The committee is hearing testimony on legislation, sponsored by 9th District Congressman Bill Keating that would ensure the tribe’s 321-acre reservation into law.

The land was designated as a reservation in 2015 by the U.S. Department of Interior. However, a federal judge reversed that designation a year later, siding with local residents who challenged the basis for the agency’s decision.

The committee will hear from Cromwell and others who will argue the land should be deemed the reservation land of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe.
