July 4th Holiday Travel Could be Record-Setting

A record number of Americans are expected to travel for the upcoming Independence Day holiday.

AAA (Triple-A) says 46.9 million will travel 50 miles or more from home, an increase of more than five percent compared with last year and the most at any point since 2001. The majority of those travelers – 39.7 million – will take to the roads.

1.25 million Massachusetts residents are expected to travel with nearly 1.1 million doing so by car. It marks only the second time since Triple-A has been keeping records that travelers by car in the Bay State will top the one million mark.

Triple-A says in addition to strong economic variables, the expected increase in travelers this year is boosted by Independence Day falling on a Wednesday, giving travelers more flexibility to schedule a trip the weekend before or after the holiday.
