W. Dennis Man Sentenced for Workers' Comp Fraud

A former TSA employee from West Dennis has been sentenced to six months probation and ordered to pay more than $38,000 in restitution to the Department of Labor.

Richard A. Mariani, 76, pleaded guilty to one count of fraud in obtaining more than $30,000 in workers’ compensation.

Mariani was employed as a Transportation Security Officer at Barnstable Municipal Airport from 2002 to 2011 when he suffered a workplace injury that he alleged left him unable to work because his injury severely limited his capacity for physical activities.

But in 2015, Mariani started providing home irrigation services to customers who paid him in cash. Federal prosecutors said Mariani was engaged in the very physical activities he claimed his work injury prevented him from doing.
