Chatham is issuing a warning about emails being sent from scammers to residents with active land use permit applications.
The phishing emails provide many accurate details and appear at first glance to be legitimate, but they ask for payments that are complete fabrications.
Some folks who got caught up in the scam were told to make payments by wire transfer, apps or using cryptocurrency, options the town would never use.
Town leaders say their official emails will only come from an address that ends with "at Chatham-dash-MA-dot-gov."
Any other address is likely a scam and should be deleted without clicking on any links or attachments.
