A bill designed to prevent a tragedy that struck close to home has been filed with the state House and Senate.
The Maggie Hubbard Rental Safety Act calls on property owners to certify the presence of working smoke alarms before these may be listed for rental.
This follows the deaths of Shannon Hubbard, a teacher at Chatham Elementary School and her one-year-old daughter Maggie.
They died in a house fire in Clinton, New York last October; John Hubbard, a police officer in Dennis and their three-year-old son Jack escaped.
There were no working smoke detectors in the home they rented through Airbnb.
