Federal approval has been granted for the Cape Bridges project.
The Federal Highway Administration has approved the final Environmental Impact Statement, and issued a formal green light.
PennDOT will oversee the replacement of the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges, and the approval allows for permitting, construction bid requests and securing of one point two billion dollars in federal funds.
Qualifications from design and construction firms will be accepted through July 28th.
Preconstruction is set to begin in late 2027.
This is the first FHA approval for a highway project in Massachusetts since 1991.
