Scientists from the Center for Coastal Studies have spotted the season's first North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay.
An aerial survey this week showed one of the endangered whales less than a mile east of Pilgrim Beach in Plymouth and the other was seen seven miles west of Wellfleet.
Researchers say North Atlantic right whales typically arrive in Cape Cod Bay in early winter and seasonal protections are not yet in place, so boaters should be aware of whales in the area and exercise caution.
