O'Malley Retires- Successor Bishop Henning "I Am At A Loss For Words"

It's official.

Pope Francis has named Bishop Richard Henning from the Diocese of Providence to succeed Cardinal Sean O'Malley as Archbishop of Boston.

O'Malley, who is 80, has served as archbishop for 20 years following the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law during the priest sex abuse scandal.

Henning has been bishop in Rhode Island for just over a year.

In a video statement to the diocese, the Bishop Elect says that he usually is never at a loss for words- but in this case he can't find the words to express his sorrow for leaving the Providence Diocese.

Prior to his move to Providence, he was auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Center, New York, which covers most of Long Island.
