Many Cape and Islands communities could receive a new designation in a bill before the state Senate.
The measure would designate Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, plus several other towns as “seasonal communities,” and is part of the five-billion-dollar Senate housing bond legislation.
It includes a local option fee or tax which municipalities could adopt on high-value real estate transfers.
The money would then be used for affordable housing.
The House version of the bill removed the fee; a Senate vote is expected later today.
