Portions of Buzzards Bay are under a shellfish closure.
Officials have extended a buffer zone between the outflow from the New Bedford and Fairhaven Wastewater Treatment plant, which may include more than 103-thousand acres.
The closure comes through guidance from the federal Food and Drug Administration.
Bob Glenn of the Division of Marine Fisheries says bi-valve shellfish are particularly vulnerable to contamination.
Just over 69 hundred acres of New Bedford Harbor are closed to shellfishing, with the need for a larger zone due to the growth of the South Coast population.
