More Stringent Speed Limits For Vessels Considered

A proposed federal rule would expand enforcement of speed limits for marine vessels.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is seeking to amend the rule which is designed to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale from vessel strikes.

More than 90-thousand public comments have been sent to NOAA on the proposal, including objections from the Steamship Authority, which believes it would force them to cut trips between the Cape and Islands.

The measure is now in the final stage of executive review.
