The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued a written request to the owners of the former Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, regarding possible air pollution.
This stems from the evaporation of contaminated water at the Plymouth site.
DEP is giving Holtec International three weeks to provide a figure on what the public may be breathing.
The evaporation involved an estimated 150 thousand gallons of water, which contained radioactive elements and other contamination.
A state application process would be the result if emissions exceed certain levels.
A Holtec spokesman says water quality is under continuous testing.
