The Harwich Planning Board has approved a special permit for a facility that will extract blood from horseshoe crabs.
The company seeking the permit is Charles River Laboratories International, based in Wilmington.
Horseshoe crab blood is valued for its usefulness in the pharmaceutical industry, but some have expressed concern about mortality rates.
The facility is proposed for a building in Harwich’s Industrial Zoning District on Queen Anne Road.
