Harwich Aims To Deter Damaging Activity On Conservation Land

The Harwich Conservation Department is considering plans to deter damaging and dangerous activity at the Robbins Pond Conservation area.

Conservation agent Amy Usowski wants to place gates along the dirt track to prevent people from driving around barriers, dumping trash illegally, and damaging the local ecosystem.

However, Select Board Chair Michael MacAskill doesn't believe gates will really deter people.

He said Usowski's plan goes against Harwich’s belief that town-owned properties are for public use.

MacAskill instead wants to focus on deterring people from getting to the old cranberry bog in the remote conservation area.
